Ruth's quilts

Ruth took up serious patchwork and quilting this year (2005), having dabbled with patchwork on and off over the last couple of decades.

Here are some pictures of what she has produced...

This is my latest quilt which is still a work in progress. I took a class at the Quilt University called Structured Fabrics. In the class you make your own checks, plaid and stripes to then use in a quilt top. On the right you can see my original fabric choices. It remained more or less the same with some minor changes. On the far right is the check fabric which was woven from 3 different materials. The check also forms the basis of the plaid.

Here I am sewing my one of my stripey fabrics. I also made a pale stripe too. All the fabrics are made by freehand cutting strips of material and then fusing them onto vilene interfacing. Then the raw edges are sewn over using a zig-zag stitch, which is what I am doing here.

Below on the left you can see the beginnings of the plaid, with the first layer of thin strips in lilac sewn onto the check to cover the raw edges. This was followed by 2 more layers. The 3rd layer was the dark brown and yellow flowery strips, which gave a bit of depth to the plaid. The final layer was the orangey srips. You can see the plaid quite nicely in the middle photo below which shows a corner of the finished quilt top. On the right is the finished quilt top. Now I just have to get the batting and the material for the backing, come up with a quilting design, quilt it, bind it and then ...

... it will be ready for hanging on the wall. The finished quilt should be 36 inches square.
