Daphne Oram, founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop

I had never heard of Daphne Oram until I read an article on the BBC UK website today. She was the driving force who pushed the BBC to set up the Radiophonic Workshop, which is probably best known for it's involvement in creating the sound effects for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

She sounds to have been a very interesting person, who among other things, gave Dr. Who's Tardis the noises made when dematerializing. (I used to be a big fan of the early Dr. Who programs - a BBC TV series which started in the early 1960's and ran until the 1990's, if I recall correctly.) She also invented a machine for turning pictures drawn on 35 mm film into music.

She died on January 5th this year.
