Noisy Tiger

I upgraded our Macs to OS X 10.4 (Tiger) at the weekend, which went almost smoothly – for some strange reason, Ruth couldn’t print to our networked HP LaserJet 2550L printer afterwards – I eventually got it going using the Line Printer Daemon (LPD) protocol, which I’ve never heard of before. It still needs more research, since LPD doesn’t support colour printing, which will upset Ruth when she notices. Oddly enough my G5 works fine, whereas even an archive / fresh install didn’t fix Ruth’s PowerBook.

I have just two small irritations left now:

  • When I log in on my G5 tower, the Keyboard Set-up Assistent decides that my (Apple) keyboard is non-standard and wants me to type the key next to shift, only to then complain that I am using a build-in (sic) keyboard and I should use the external keyboard.

  • Every time I empty the trash, it makes an irritating noise which I haven’t yet found out how to switch off – any suggestions, anyone? I don’t want the noise when I am listing to iTunes…
