We knew that in the summer we’d need to keep the direct sun out of the bedrooms. We’ve already had temperatures of 40°C and humidity of over 80% while we were here in July. That humidity was very high, even for here. Normally it’s more often in the range of 40% – 60% at this time of year.
The sun shines into the main bedroom in the morning, and moves round to the guest room in the afternoon and evening. But finding blinds that went well with the style of the house wasn’t easy. In the end Enrique and Antonio found a company near Valencia, more or less round the corner from the Ford factory in Almussafes, (Fustablinds), who make traditional wooden venetian blinds in various colours.
We chose a natural finish which matched the underside of the roof, and the blinds arrived last week. We are very pleased with blinds. We have also been impressed with both the quality of the workmanship from Fustablinds, and their attention to customer satisfaction.
Recommended if you need traditional wooden blinds!
- Mounted in front of the bedroom doors
- The blinds match the rustic look of the house
- Detail showing the wooden slats – spot the snail!
- Guest room blind
- Guest room blind

These blinds look very attractive.
If you have the time, you could enjoy taking an afternoon nap with the blinds drawn. Oooh, a nice siesta on a hot afternoon.
No need for this here in Germany as you probably know.
Last night I exchanged my summer quilt for my goose-down feather bed again.
Yes we like them. They were an experiment to see how effective they are at keeping the rooms cooler, and I think we will be ordering more blinds for the office windows (which are next to the guest room window and the same size).
Fusta, by the way, is Valenciano for “wood”, so the name of the company, translated, is “Wood Blinds”, which is exactly what they make.
I made a mistake putting the dimensions of the smaller blind into the order mail, and ordered it exactly 1 meter too long. So I had to take it back to the factory to be shortened, which they kindly did free of charge. While I was there, I was talking to one of the sales team – he told me that over 90% of their output is for export, and that they do a number of special solutions, for example leather-covered blind slats for windows on yachts. Quite interesting! And we like to support local suppliers where we can, especially as Spain has been so badly hit by the crisis.
