Record companies gone crazy

This 29 second family video clip of an 18 month old boy which has a barely recognizable rendering of a Prince song playing in the background resulted in Universal filing a court complaint against YouTube to get the video taken down.

I think the music industry has completely forgotten who funds their . . . → Read More: Record companies gone crazy

Paying lip-service to curbing pollution?

The BBC reports (my emphasis in the following quote): There are calls for the European Union to ban the making of cars that can go at more than 101mph (162km/h). The proposal comes in a report to the European Parliament on EU plans for a law to curb CO2 emissions from cars.

British house prices

Perfect hindsight is a wonderful thing – we really shouldn’t have sold our UK house when we moved to Germany in 1980! Thanks to the The Economist for pointing it out.

Update: At least we are considerably better off, than this family in Morocco, who don’t have anything to laugh . . . → Read More: British house prices

Too little time

The music industry has been complaining for years that CD sales are falling, and blaming it on piracy, especially people uploading files to the internet. But could there be a far simpler explanation? Business Week has a very plausible suggestion – we simply don’t have enough time to listen to more music.

Club of Rome updated

Remember the Club of Rome report Limits to Growth, published in 1972? There’s an interesting article and graphics (subscription required for full article) in the current New Scientist showing what the latest estimates are for how long precious and rare metals will last.

Not just of interest if you are considering buying jewellery . . . → Read More: Club of Rome updated

Interesting question

Right now, I’m twenty years old. I am willing to take a large percentage off the top of my salary for the rest of my working life in order to be able to retire very young and live off of the proceeds of my investments and do volunteer work. How many years would I have to work if I saved 20% of my income?

Do we need better copyright?

You might think that having lobbied successfully over the last 50 years to get the copyright period extended from 28 years in 1964 to up to 90 years today, that companies such as NBC, News Corp., Disney, Time Warner and Microsoft would be happy enough. But no. They have formed a new organisation this . . . → Read More: Do we need better copyright?

Aussie and NZ 747s will glide to save fuel

Richard Branson started thinking about saving fuel for Virgin Atlantic by having their jets towed to the take-off point at Heathrow and Gatwick without using their own engines.

Now, from April onwards, Quantas and Air New Zealand are going to try gliding Boeing 747 jumbo jets into Auckland airport to save fuel on . . . → Read More: Aussie and NZ 747s will glide to save fuel

How much do they leave in your pocket?

The Economist has published an interesting – and if you live in Belgium or Germany, depressing – table showing what percentage of an employer’s labour costs doesn’t arrive in employee’s pay packets. In Belgium and Germany, more than 50% lands in the government’s pocket or pays for compulsary insurance.

What did surprise me, . . . → Read More: How much do they leave in your pocket?

Exxon – big profits being misused

I mentioned recently the book “When smoke ran like water”, which describes how industry has for decades paid to discredit research which they don’t like.

The latest example of such behaviour comes from Exxon, who has been offering scientists $10 000 each if they will discredit research on climate change. Exxon is the . . . → Read More: Exxon – big profits being misused
